A little clarity goes a long way.

Paste text or open a UTF-8 TXT file, then choose a word or character target. Counts update as you type for shorter drafts; use Count words for larger inputs. Set the target to 0 to turn the goal off. Copy or download the text report before leaving.
TXT import accepts files up to 2 MB, not Word, PDF or formatted documents. Character counts are Unicode code points, not bytes or visible symbols. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute and rounds up. Drafts and goals are not saved.
Editors disagree about hyphenated words, emoji and punctuation. This tool uses Unicode word segmentation where available and counts characters as Unicode code points, not bytes.

Try Å 🙂: it has 3 Unicode code points, 2 characters without whitespace and 7 UTF-8 bytes. The displayed character count includes spaces and line breaks; “without spaces” excludes tabs and other whitespace too. A family emoji or a letter plus a combining accent can count as several code points even when it looks like one symbol. This tool does not display a byte count.
Where supported, the browser uses English Intl.Segmenter word boundaries; otherwise it uses groups of Unicode letters and digits. Hyphens and other languages may differ from your editor. Unique words are compared after lowercasing. Reading time is words ÷ 200, rounded up to whole minutes: 201 words gives 2 minutes, not a measured reading speed. Sentence counts are punctuation-based estimates.
A character goal includes whitespace. A word goal uses the same word count shown above it. The progress bar stops at the target, but the count continues beyond it. Use whole-number targets up to 1,000,000; 0 switches the goal off. Goals are session-only. Download saves the count report, not your original draft; keep the draft in your own editor.
Open local file reads a plain-text file into the workspace; it is not uploaded. Save text as UTF-8 to avoid encoding surprises. Word/DOCX and PDF parsing is not supported. Count your draft first, then deliberately clean whitespace or change case in the related tools and compare the result. Whitespace cleanup can alter meaningful spacing in code or poetry.
Review your draft with whitespace cleanup or case conversion, then count again. Copy your draft before switching tools; input is not transferred automatically.
